Greenwich Unemployment Rate Rises to 5.9 Percent

An increase of .4 percent in the town's unemployment rate over the past four weeks, however, Greenwich's average remains below the county, state and national averages.

 

There was an uptick in Greenwich's local labor situation over the last four weeks — with the town's latest unemployment rate growing by .4 percent from September.

According to the latest figures released by the Connecticut Department of Labor, Greenwich's unemployment for October was 5.9 percent or 1,756 people of a town-wide labor force of 29,594.

In September, the town's unemployment rate was 5.5 percent or 1,625 of 29,446 employable residents.

In Connecticut, the pool of jobless people last month rose to 9.0 percent overall. Nationally, the national unemployment rate is 7.9 percent.

Locally, Stamford's unemployment rate currently sits at 7.3 percent, Darien at 6.3 percent and New Canaan's is at 6.0 percent. The Fairfield County unemployment average increased in October to 7.9 percent or 37,582 people. In September, the county-wide unemployment rate 35,536 or 7.5 percent.

Greenwich Numbers

Greenwich's unemployment rate climbed back to 5.9 percent after dipping to 5.5 percent in September.

The town's highest reported unemployment rate this year was in June when 6.3 or 1,927 residents out of work.
