Things you should know

Baby it's hot outside ... inside too, if you're at Greenwich High.

It's bad enough that Mother Nature is giving us a premature taste of summer with temps hovering in the low 90s with enough humidity to saturate a sponge.

It apparently was even worse at Greenwich High School where students and parents report that things got a little hot under the collar at the Hillside Road campus Tuesday. It seems the air conditioning in the building was on the fritz, leaving 2,700 students and faculty "miserable."

"They boiled away the day," said one parent of a sophomore. "The conditions were such, it was unpleasant. My son literally had to come home and take a shower."

In an email, schools spokesman Kim Eves said, "a small A/C unit in the server room at the high school was down (Tuesday morning), which caused the server to shut down. The server runs the school A/C. They had the school A/C running manually by 7:30 am, and shortly thereafter, the small unit A/C in the server room and the server itself were up and running."

Fire Department to get new training facility

It looks like plans to build a new state-of-the-art fire training facility on North Street are shaping up.

The multi-purpose building will allow firefighters to conduct live fire, search and rescue and trench rescue exercises in a modular building. The $1.9 million project was granted municipal improvement status by the Board of Selectmen and will now be submitted to the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval.

The existing facility is nearly 30 years old and does not meet training standards. According to the town's superintendent of buildings and maintenance, the concrete block building has been damaged from the extreme heat and from water freezing during cold weather exercises.

The new center will be located on town property at 393 North St., where there is a parks and recreation facility and Greenwich Animal Control. Monelli said the site will allow for better truck access and water supply.

Traffic alert:
