Things you should know:

Is it time to exercise some change?

Much of the "fitness equipment" in the Greenwich High School Fitness Center is older than the students using them.

While their lats and hamstrings are still getting that lactic acid burn, the equipment is dated and in need of a "comprehensive overhaul," according to retiring PE Coordinator Collen Morey who has been in the district some 20 years.

Much of the Trotter strength equipment was acquired about 18 years ago when Garland Allen was the Athletic Director at GHS. The cardiovascular machines (treadmills and stationary bikes) are newer—just 12- to 13-years-old.

At the time, the strength equipment was re-purposed from a generous corporate private gym which was upgrading their own apparatus.

Thanks to the work of Morey's department, the equipment has been maintained despite heavy usage especially from the GHS athletic teams. Still one can easily see the equipment is aged, for instance the cable machines where the fluidity and effectiveness is not nearly the same as more recent models.

Morey told the Board of Education last week that the "very dated" fitness equipment "really needs to be replaced and improved" so that it is more in line with the mechanical operations that inherent in equipment of today."

Meetings today:

8 p.m.: RTM monthly meeting at .

It should be a lively discussion tonight when the RTM considers approval of a temporary ban on gas-powered leaf blowers for the month of August. The ban is the culmination of 14 months of consideration, review and discussion on the blowers in April 2011.

A committee spearheaded by Selectman Drew Marzullo has made the recommendation which The legislation also includes an increase in fines for violators who would be ticketed by Greenwich Police. The first offense draws a warning; second offense a $100 fine; the third and any subsequent offense: a $249 fine. Currently, the fine is $100 regardless of the number of times someone violates the policy.

The RTM also will consider accepting a gift of up to $850,000 from the Greenwich Point Conservancy which is proposing to completely renovate the old barn building near the entrance to the popular 147-acre waterfront park. The work is to include the razing of the brick building housing bathrooms and renovation and expansion of the barn building that houses the concession stand and lifeguard station, as well as a reconfiguration of the drop-off driveway near the Innis Arden Seaside Science Center, the group renovated and opened last year.
