Things you should know:

Should Town Hall security be tightened?

That's the question that the Greenwich Board of Selectmen will be discussing in a special meeting called for 10 a.m. today.

In the wake of the containing a white powdery substance on April 26 in the ground floor offices of the Information Technology and Geographic Information Services departments, Greenwich Police have been reviewing security and access to the 101 Field Point Rd. building.

The selectmen are scheduled to hold the discussion in an executive session—meaning it is not open to the public—that is expected to include Police Chief James Heavey, Fire Chief Peter Siecienski, Emergency Management Director Dan Warzoha, officials from Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, the town health and human resource departments.

The discovery of the envelope led to a full-scale response by the Greenwich Fire Department including its Special Operations Unit, the Stamford Police Bomb Squad, the Connecticut Department of Emergency and Environmental Protection, and the FBI. The IT and GIS , with the GIS reopened to the public on May 2.

Police have said that tests conducted by the Connecticut Health Department revealed the powdery substance "did not contain harmful pathogens." However, they have not said whether the substance has been identified. Officials have said that the envelope is believed to have been left on an office counter and not processed in the mail.

Looking for volunteering your time outdoors?

Then perhaps you'll want to join at 10 a.m. tomorrow, May 5. The group needs volunteers to help continue its efforts to eradicate Greenwich Point of invasive plants.

Volunteers should meet 10 a.m., near the clambake area. The Friends are continuing the project they began last year. Tomorrow there will be more cutting and bagging garlic mustard, and volunteers should bring gloves and pruners.

And according to the Friends website, "This is a good opportunity for junior high and high school students to receive community service hours."
