House Approves Election Day Voter Registration Bill

The 83-59 vote brings Connecticut closer to becoming the third state in New England behind Maine and New Hampshire to allow same day voter registration and the 11th state in the country.

“Passage of this legislation demonstrates Connecticut’s commitment to fair, accessible elections, and I applaud the House for their action on this bill. We’ve sent a clear signal to the rest of the country that Connecticut will not go in the direction of other states," Gov. Malloy said in a statement released on Monday by his office.  "Using the technology we have available to preserve the integrity of our elections, expand access to the ballot box, and improve participation in the public process will allow our democracy flourish.

House Republican leader Larry Cafero of Norwalk expressed his opposition of the bill saying that it would make it easier for some "little brat from Virginia" to commit fraud by voting via absentee ballot in a presidential election and then voting again while attending college in Connecticut.

If the bill, which now goes to Senate, would go into effect in time for the November 2013 local elections if passed.
