Washington's Birthday: What's Closed, What's Open

On Monday, all government offices, including schools and post offices, are closed—except for the Department of Motor Vehicles; banks may remain open.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles, including its Norwalk office on Main Avenue, will close at 12:30 p.m. today. It will be closed Saturday as well in observance of George Washington's Birthday. But on Monday, when nearly all other government offices are closed, it will be open for business.

Monday, Feb. 21, is considered a federal holiday, and state and local governments, including both Connecticut and the Town of Greenwich, close most offices. Banks in Connecticut have the option of remaining open, but must announce it well in advance.

In federal law, the name is "Washington's Birthday," not "President's Day," and that's how the federal government refers to it, although some states (not Connecticut) and organizations use the other name.

The following are CLOSED Monday:

Banks and credit unions in New York state and elsewhere outside of Connecticut (and some banks in Connecticut—banks here may remain open if they announce it well in advance)
Town offices and Town Hall.
Federal government offices.
Libraries—including Greenwich Library, Byram Shubert Library, Cos Cob Library and Perrot Memorial Library.
Post offices
Public and private schools in Greenwich
State offices (except state Department of Motor Vehicles offices)

The following are OPEN Monday:

Banks and credit unions, perhaps— they may remain open at their discretion in Connecticut
Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles offices (which instead closed Friday after 12:30 p.m. and Saturday)
Grocery stores
Restaurants
Other businesses
Greenwich Recyling will pick up on regular schedule.
Holly Hill Transfer Station will be open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
