Who to Call After a Power Outage

During a power outage, should a homeowner call an electrician or the utility company?

It is quite common for tree branches to fall during a storm and knock down power lines. Unfortunately, many homeowners are unsure as to what parts of the electrical system is their responsibility and what parts will be repaired by the utility company. This is especially a problem during massive outages when homeowners may be without power for several days while waiting for the utility company to show up, then are told they also need to call a licensed electrician which will mean additional time with out power.

After a storm, when it is safe to go outside, a homeowner should inspect any damage to their structure or surrounding property. Be extremely careful if there are any downed power lines. Always assume those cables are live and do not go near them. In general, when the power lines are overhead, the utility company is responsible for those cables from the street to the top of the house. After the connection at the top of the house, the homeowner is responsible for the rest of the electrical system. This includes the service cable or conduit on running down the side of the house, the meter box, and the electrical panel. When a branch knocks down the electrical wires going to the house, it usually rips the electrical service cable on the side of the house down also. During the process, it may damage the service cables, and/ or the meter box. Only an electrician can determine if the system can be secured back to the wall or needs to be replaced completely.

So, after a storm, restoring your power may require both the utility company and an electrician. If your whole neighborhood is without power, call the utility company and report it. If there is a large fallen branch on your property and the service cable is ripped off the side of your house, call a licensed electrician.

Also very important is the call to the tree or landscaping company because it is hard for the utility or electrician to get access to the power lines if there is a huge tree branch blocking the area infront of the meter box.

During the snowstorm last october, that broke branches and power lines, my mother had a live wire that was sparking. She called Con Ed, Police and Fire Department, repeatedly. She had terminal cancer and was down to about 85 pounds. The the fire dept said they couldn't do anything until Con Ed came out. When the Con Ed guys finally made it to the house about four days later (with the wire sparking near the house the entire time) they told her she should have had them come sooner and she said, I tried. If someone has a sparking wire near their house, something needs to be done ASAP. Hopefully that is happening now.

Right. Because that's safe. Hopefully the kids don't trip over the trees and downed power lines on our street, in the pitch black.

Halloween is a Pagan holiday and should NOT be celebrated at all. Do you celebrators even know what you are celebrating? Fairfield, think twice about what you are teaching the youth. Seek the narrow path, the path of the God fearing righteous and God will have favor on you and yours. Matthew 7:13-14

If the power goes out in your neighborhood, do not assume your neighbors have called. it's better that the power company gets a dozen call, rather than none! ;)

Halloween is a Pagan holiday and celebrating it is sending a clear secular message to the youth. We recognize this season by having a 'fall festival', and, trust me, tons of candy and treats are involved. Our fellowship is Christ centered. Sam: 'non sequitur' was not an appropriate response. I am sorry that you didn't understand my post.

Give it a rest. There is NOTHING wrong with secularism. Who do you think you are? When anyone wonders why Christianity gets a bad rap in this country it's because of religiously arrogant people like yourself. Not everyone worships the same god or religion - or anything at all. Get over it and move on with your own life. Stop worrying about what other people believe or not believe. You think my kids give one hoot about what Halloween may mean? For the kids, it's all about candy, costumes and FUN.

Ava,
Maybe you should dress up as a Pagan. Ever wonder why some houses get egged?
Master October 31, 2012 at 10:21 pm
The celebration of Halloween was created by the christian to entice the pagans into the church. All based of the pagan holiday that celebrates the past lives of there ancestors. Before you demean this holiday, do your research. so if you want to blame anyone for the celebration of Halloween, blame your church

Just curious Ava R. -- how old are you? You keep repeating the same blurbs on multiple posts on the internet over and over again!

I don't agree Ava R. Religion had nothing to do with this article. Archaic, personal, superstitious beliefs being interjected into a conversation does not further the conversation but sets it back to an ignorant time from the dark ages.
