6 Outstanding Greenwich Teachers Recognized During Appreciation Week

The Greenwich Public School District hosted Tuesday the Distinguished Teachers Awards ceremony at Western Middle School celebrating six teachers for their excellence. The ceremony falls in the middle of Teacher Appreciation Week.

"[The theme between teachers this year] is personalization, connections," said Superintendent William S. McKersie. "As a parent with three kids in school, I'm always wondering 'who will have my child?' These six recognized this afternoon, in personalized learning, has wonderful connections with students."

The six teachers recognized were:
• Cecilia Aita, Central Middle School, Grade 8, Special Education
• Jennifer Benoit, Greenwich High School, Grades 9-12, Special Education
• Melissa Macchio Brown, Greenwich High School, Grades 9-12, English/AVID
• Stephen Kinner, Eastern Middle School, Grades 6-8, Technology Education
• Esra Murray, International School at Dundee, Grade 5
• Mary Beth Smith, Greenwich High School, Grades 9-12, English

"There is no more important job than being a teacher," said First Selectman Peter Tesei. "Teaching is the most challenging-but-rewarding profession."

Greenwich Patch had the chance to talk with Mr. Kinner and Mrs. Murray and asked them, "Why did you get into teaching?" Hear their answers in the video above.
