Clock is Ticking for Public 30-Day Feedback on GHS Cleanup

On Friday Patch reported that the 30-day Public Comment period for GHS Soil Cleanup  started on Sept. 5, 2013.  

The draft of the Greenwich High School soil clean up plan known as the Remedial Action Plan, or RAP, is posted to the Greenwich Public Schools Web Site along with a GHS Environmental Testing Update.

The document includes an illustration of the GHS campus and maps out arsenic remediation areas, pesticide remediation areas, PCB remediation areas up to 3' and PCB remediation areas up to 2' and PCB remediation areas up to 1'.

The community is invited to comment online at the GPS Web Site through Oct. 5, 2013. 

Public Meeting, Sept. 18
The RAP will also be presented to the community at Greenwich High School on Sept. 18 from 6:00pm - 9:00p.m. Experts will take present and take questions. The US EPA, the key regulator whose approval is necessary for the RAP to proceed, will be present. Also the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the Dept. of Health (DPH) will be available to answer questions.

The Chair of the Board of Education, Leslie Moriarty; Schools Superintendent McKersie; and Commissioner of Dept. of Public Works Amy Siebert will be on hand, as weill the MISA Building Committee Chair.

There presentation begins at at 7:00p.m. following an informal opportunity to meet with these representatives starting at 6:00p.m.

If approved, the RAP involves GHS campus being closed during summer, 2014.

The timeframe for the RAP is two years, with work primarily being completed during summer 2014 and 2015.

According to the proposed RAP, after remedial activities are completed, protective barriers will be protected and maintained. Also groundwater will be monitored and an "Environmental Land Use Restriction" will be developed in the case of future construction activities. 

The RAP calls for soil containing PCBs greater than 50 mg/kg to be transported to Wayne, Michigan for disposal and soil containing PCBs less than 50/mg/kg to be transported to Seneca Meadows, Inc. landfill in Seneca Falls, NY.
