CMS Students: 'Bring Back Mrs. Somers' [VIDEO]

Nearly 100 students stage march to support return of their Central Middle School principal.

About 100 students made their voices heard Tuesday morning with a march in support of their principal Shelley Somers.

The students - carrying placards - gathered outside the Indian Rock Lane campus shouting chants of "What do we want? Bring back Mrs. Somers." (Please see video.)

Oct. 6 after Greenwich Public School officials were notified that she had faced revocation of her day-care license 15 years ago, amid allegations a child was left alone inside a bus and that she did notify parents that another may have ingested medication. Somers did not indicate that part of her employment history when she applied for the Central Middle School post in 2009. A pre-employment investigation and interview by school officials did not reveal the history either.

According to CMS parent Viveca Woods, her eighth-grade daughter Brittany participated in the protest that was organized by students via Facebook. " Mrs. Somers has been very effective; very creative by thinking outside the box to make a great learning environment for the children," Woods said. "She makes school enjoyable for the students."

to students, parents and staff on Monday, apologizing for any disruption the situation has caused and urged them to continue with the daily learning process. She also expressed hope she would return to the post she has held since January 2010.

Interim School Superintendent Roger Lulow has said the in light of the Somers situation.

Greenwich schools spokeswoman Kim Eves said, "Central Middle School students held an orderly demonstration this morning in support of their Principal Shelley Somers. The students were on their way to class by 8AM and the Superintendent of Schools then met with a representative group to hear their concerns."
