Cos Cob School Gets An Assistant Principal

Barbara Brennan Oxer, a fourth-grade teacher at Old Greenwich School, has been promoted to assistant principal at Cos Cob School.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. William
S. McKersie has announced the appointment of Ms. Barbara Brennan Oxer as the Assistant Principal for Cos
Cob School (CCS). Ms. Oxer is currently a fourth grade teacher at Old Greenwich School. Her appointment as
Assistant Principal will be effective once a new classroom teacher is selected for Ms. Oxer’s fourth grade class.
Dr. McKersie said, “Ms. Oxer has been an educator for ten years, with twenty years of professional experience
in the private sector. She is a highly regarded teacher by peers, students and parents, witness her selection last
year as a Distinguished Teacher. She has proven management skills from her career in business, and has made
important contributions to her school and the District through curriculum writing, professional learning, and
data-driven improvement planning.” Cos Cob School Principal Kim Beck, adds, “Barbara impressed us with her
child-centered, highly professional approach to teaching and learning and engendered a great deal of confidence
in her decision-making abilities. As a long-time Cos Cob resident and former CCS parent, Barbara knows the
school and community very well. I am excited to begin working with Barbara and am confident that she will be
a valuable addition to our school community.”

After more than twenty years working in the private sector, as a Certified Public Accountant, Ms. Oxer began
her career as a teacher at Old Greenwich School in 2002. She has taught kindergarten, first and fifth grades and
is currently a fourth grade teacher. She is a peer-selected member of the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory
Committee and a member of the Old Greenwich School Improvement and Data Teams. She is also serving her
second term as the teacher liaison member of the OGS PTA, and is involved in the District-wide development of
Transdisciplinary Units. She has been an active participant in curriculum writing and school improvement
planning, led professional learning workshops for colleagues, and was selected as a Distinguished Teacher in
2012 by the Greenwich Distinguished Teachers Awards Committee.
Ms. Oxer received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Accounting from the
University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT in 1977, and a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education (2001)
and a Sixth Year Certificate in Educational Administration and Supervision (2009) both from the University of
Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT.
