SPEECH COMPETITION AT CONVENT OF THE SACRED HEART:

Convent of the Sacred Heart hosted its annual speech and debate competition for the New York Catholic Forensic League last Saturday.  The school welcomed 280 students and 70 adults from around greater New York for the 11-hour event at the King Street campus. Sacred Heart is the only school in Connecticut and Greenwich to participate in the league’s competition.

Convent of the Sacred Heart’s team was co-captained by senior Molly Blessing of Old Greenwich and junior Catherine Colford of Scarsdale, NY.  The top finisher was  co-captain Catherine Colford, finishing first in Original Oratory.

Sacred Heart featured a team of 25 contestants. Out of the 20 competing schools, Sacred Heart team captured the seventh-place award. In Original Oratory, sophomore Nora Henrie of Stamford finished with the sixth-place trophy in a category where sophomore victories are rare. In Congressional Debate, sophomore Blair Kennedy of Greenwich finished third out of more than 20 contestants and won a half-qualification for the state championships.

In Junior Varsity Oral Interpretation, sophomore Alexa de Allessandrini of Scarsdale got a "half-qual" for states by taking home the sixth-place trophy out of nearly 60 contestants and her fellow sophomore Nicole Zoulis of Yonkers, NY. won fourth place.

Laura K. Berzins, a member of the Class of 2011 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, was named to the dean's list for her outstanding academic achievement during the fall semester of the 2010-11 year. Berzins, the daughter of Gints and Mara Berzins of Greenwich, is majoring in English at Colby. She attended Peddie School.

Lane A. McVey of Bronxville, NY., a junior at Colby College in Waterville, ME., has recently returned from spending the fall semester of the 2010-11 academic year in Czech Republic studying at CIEE- Prague. McVey, a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, is the daughter of Richard McVey of Greenwich, and Tracy McVey of Bronxville, N.Y. She is majoring in government.

Jessica Dewing-Hommes, class of 2011 at Connecticut College and a resident of Greenwich, has been named to the Dean's Honors list for the 2010 fall semester.
