Greenwich Physical Ed Leader Agrees to Interim Post

Colleen Morey to postpone retirement while district mulls leadership transition.

Greenwich School Superintendent Dr. Roger Lulow has announced that Colleen Morey has agreed to return to her role as program coordinator for Physical Education and Health.

Working part-time and as an interim position, effective July 1, the interim position will allowincoming school superintendent Dr. William McKersie flexibility in examining the district’s administrative needs and structure for the future. The coordinator’s former responsibilities for SEL (social-emotional learning) will be assumed by Director of Pupil Personnel Services Mary Forde, who already oversees portions of this area. Several other responsibilities that currently fall under this program area will be transitioned to other positions to be determined.

Lulow said, “ We are grateful to Ms. Morey for her many years of service to the Greenwich Public Schools and for making adjustments in her plans for retirement to take on this one-year assignment. Her two decades of experience with the district will provide consistency and valuable support with the leadership transition over the next year.”

Morey has been a devoted and passionate leader in the area of service learning. In particular, beginning as a service project for Arch School students in 1996, she has involved many of the schools in various fund raising efforts for the Hogares Luz Y Vida Orphanage in Bogota, Columbia. This orphanage provides a home, an education and medical support to orphans, many of which have special needs. The orphanage has experienced tremendous growth and support and the perceptions of the community and those involved in the development of the orphanage have changed from viewing the children as those with disabilities to those with incredible capabilities. Morey has contributed much of her own time and energy to this effort, and has provided an opportunity for many students and colleagues in the district to help those in need.

Morey is the recipient of the 2002 Program Excellence Award for Quality Program Development from Project Adventure International (one of eight international recipients). She was also named the 2002 Educational Leader of the Year by the Connecticut Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development for her outstanding achievement in leadership, curriculum development, supervision, and staff development.

Morey began teaching in 1977 as a Physical Education/Health Education Specialist, K-12 for the Carlsbad Public Schools in Carlsbad, CA. She also spent a brief period in private industry developing and conducting individualized fitness and nutrition programs for private and corporate clients. Before coming to Greenwich Public Schools in 1993 as
Program Coordinator for Physical Education, Health, and Family and Consumer Science, she taught in Weston and Westport.
