Investigation of CMS Principal Continuing

Greenwich Public School chief says hiring practices may be revamped; district waiting for release of state documents.

In the wake of revelations that Central Middle School Principal Shelley Somers did not include a complete employment background when hired by Greenwich Public Schools, the district is seeking to improve its hiring process.

According to a letter Interim School Superintendent Roger Lulow sent to CMS parents and staff on Oct. 14, "We have completed the investigation of the internal practices surrounding the interview and hiring process for Central Middle School Principal Shelley Somers. We have identified areas where we may be able to make improvements in the manner with which we conduct these processes." Lulow's letter did not specify what those improvements may be.

Somers was the owner of the day-care center and faced 8 allegations concerning the care of children, according to The Hartford Courant. In December 1995, the state was preparing to revoke her license and to hold hearings on the charges that included she left a toddler unsupervised in a parked van for at least 45 minutes.

Somers was hired in 2009 to assume the helm of CMS. Until the investigation is completed, Assistant Principal Jo Frame is serving as acting principal.
