Old Greenwich School Assistant Principal Named

Greenwich High School graduate tapped to be second-in-command at Old Greenwich School.

 

A New Haven Public Schools teacher who is a Greenwich High School graduate has been appointed the assistant principal at Old Greenwich School.

Interim Schools Superintendent Roger Lulow announced the appointment of Abby Ostruzka will be effective July 1. Ostruzka has taught in the New Haven Public School system for seven years, and has had extensive experience in leading and developing programs that focus on improving academic performance as well as the social-emotional well-being of all students, Lulow said in a prepared statement.

Old Greenwich School Principal Patricia Raneri said, “Abby’s knowledge of strategies and best practices for teaching and learning, and of child development is impressive. Her experience working collaboratively with staff, families and the community at large is also notable and will be an asset for the Old Greenwich School community. I look forward to working with her.”

Ms. Ostruzka began teaching in 2005 for the Timothy Dwight Elementary School in New Haven where she is a special education teacher.  She was also the chair of the school’s PPT, Student Staff Support, and the School Planning Management Teams. Additionally, she was a member of the school’s Leadership Team and Curriculum Committee. A K-3 special ed teacher with the Augusta Lewis Troup School, Ostruzka also serves on the Parent Engagement Team and the school’s Data Team.

In 2008, she developed a school-wide behavior incentive program called SOAR as the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBiS) Coach for the school. Since 2010, she has been working with the Troup School’s stakeholders as the Coordinator for Boost!, a collaborative effort with the
local United Way to identify the needs of the school and increase parent engagement.

Ostruzka is a Greenwich High School graduate and an award-winning, All-American field hockey player. Since 2005, she has been the assistant coach for Yale University’s Varsity field hockey team. The Riverside native also works with Yale student athletes in a mentoring/tutoring program at the New Haven elementary schools.


She received the New Alliance Bank’s Teacher Excellence Award in 2008 and was a finalist for New Haven’s Teacher of the Year in 2010. Ostruzka received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education and a Masters of Arts in Education from the University of Connecticut. She received a 6th Year Diploma in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University in 2009.
