Dartmouth Alumni To Stage Rowing Regatta in Greenwich

Greenwich Point will be the starting point for the races scheduled for April.

Ever Green Boat Club, a rowing club for alumni of Dartmouth College, has announced that it will stage its 2014 Alumni Sprints Regatta in April, in Old Greenwich.

The regatta will be held April 26 and 27. Alumni Sprints made history in 2013 as the first USRowing-sanctioned regatta specifically devoted to alumni racing, attracting alumni from around the globe.

"We're offering an expanded, two-day format this year," Sydney Williams, the event organizer, said in a statement. "Competitors arrive on Saturday, April 26th, prepare their boats for racing, and, later that afternoon and evening, attend a celebratory reception. Racing takes place on Sunday the 27th, and now includes the full 2,000-meter sprint distance."

Racing takes places on Greenwich Cove and stages from Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich. Rowers race the final 1,000 meters (0.62 mile) of a six-lane 2,000 meter (1.24 mile) racecourse, which extends across the Cove's widest section. Competitors can select from 35 events, segmented by age and boat type (single, double, quad, four, and eight), and race as often as they please.

Select bricks-and-mortar clubs are being invited to race the full course. "Some of the bigger clubs in Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC are looking to compete over 2000 meters and Greenwich Cove offers the perfect venue," Williams said. "These clubs' members will also compete in the alumni events. Spectators should expect fantastic races throughout the entire day and great locations throughout Greenwich Point Park to view them."

In 2013, Alumni Sprints welcomed alumni of Boston University, Brown, Cambridge, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Georgetown, Northeastern, Oxford, Princeton, the United States Military Academy, Wisconsin, Williams, Yale, and even New Zealand's University of Otago. An even larger contingent is anticipated for 2014.

"As with last year, we'll include elite-level athletes and folks who are simply looking to get back into rowing," added Mr. Williams. Alumni Sprints will award a Team Points Trophy to the alumni club placing highest across all events.

To qualify as alumni, competitors in team boats must have attended the same academic school. Although participants will mostly represent college alumni teams, Alumni Sprints welcomes individuals who wish to represent alumni teams of secondary schools. All alumni can compete, whether long-experienced or new to the sport.
