Greenwich Bowling Team Wins First State Championship

Cardinals defeat Notre Dame of Fairfield in the final match at the Nutmeg Lanes in Fairfield

The undefeated Greenwich bowling team won its first state title in school history Tuesday, rallying for a victory over Notre Dame of Fairfield at the Nutmeg Lanes in Fairfield.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 14-0 and captured the Connecticut Interscholastic Bowling League championship.

Led by Taiel Gookool, who bowled a high game of 258, Greenwich won the final two games after dropping the opener to  take the best-of-three match.

Notre Dame prevailed in the first game 953-892, but Greenwich won the second 926-885, then took the third in convincing fashion, 883-766.

According to Greewich coach Wayne Gioffrie, the Cardinals were down "30 to 40 pins" when Gookool begin a string of seven consecutive strikes in the middle game of his set.

"That was a huge game for us and a huge game for him," Gioffre said. "I think that was very deflating for Notre Dame because we won the third game by over 100 pins."

Gookool opened with a 174, then finished with a 189 for a three-game total of 621 while Packy Hanrahan had a high game of 212 in a 560 series.

Chris Ragusa bowled a 535 series (180-185-170) and Chris DiRusso turned in a 539 series (190-153-196) for the Cardinals
