Greenwich Boys, Girls Hockey Fall

The boys hockey team was blanked by West Haven 5-0 in the Cardinals' season opener Thursday night at the Dorothy Hamill Rink.

The Cardinals were outshot 34-12 by the Blue Devils, who broke open the contest with three goals in the third period.

Greenwich goallkeeper Vinny Scorese kept the score respectable with 29 saves in his first start as the Cardinals only trailed 2-0 heading into the third period.

Jim Morrissey opened the scoring in the first period for West Haven before Mike Troiano scored the first of his two goals in the second period.

Troiano, Adam Mink and Jake Lynch also scored in the third for West Haven.

Cara Lockwood scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period  as the Ridgefield girls hockey team rallied for a 4-3 victory over Greenwich.

Ciel McDermid and Hannah Jeffrey scored in the second period to give Greenwich a 3-2 after Ridgefield grabbed a 2-0 lead in the period.

Goals by Allie Schiffer and Cerone less than a minute apart had staked Ridgefield to a 2-0 lead just under nine minutes into the contest.

However, freshman Madeline Graves scored the first of three straight goals for Greenwich, pulling the Cardinals (1-1-1) within 2-1 after one.

Lockwood also scored the tying goal for Ridgefield just under five minutes into the third period.

The Greenwich boys basketball team looks for its second win of the young season on Friday when the Cardinals visit Fairfield Ludlowe at 7 p.m.

Greenwich is coming off an impressive 61-50 season-opening win over Stamford, last year's FCIAC runner-up. The game was as close as the final score suggests as Cardinals held a 57-37 lead with just over three minutes remaining.

Greenwich's Alex McMurray scored game-high 16 points to pace a balanced attack in which four players scored in double figures.

Fairfield Ludlowe opened its season with a 59-52 win at Wilton on Wednesday.

The Greenwich girls basketball, which is coming off a 44-41 loss to Stamford. hosts Ludlowe at 7 p.m.  The Cardinals have dropped two in a row.

Kelsey Cognetta and Ashyla Cody each scored 11 points as the Stamford girls basketball team shook off a slow start to defeat Greenwich 44-41 Wednesday.

Angie Jaramillo was the only player in double figures for Greenwich against Stamford with 10 points. Amanda Onofrio added eight.

Ludlowe (1-2) earned its first win of the season Wednesday, a 50-49 victory at home against Wilton.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that youth basketball clinics will begin at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center on Thursdays starting Jan. 26 for six weeks. 

The program for children in Kindergarten will run from 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm.  Children in first and second grades will meet from 4:30 pm to 5:15 pm, and third and fourth graders meet from 5:15 to 6 pm. The cost for the program is $100.

Coach John Czarnecki will teach this junior basketball class. He  is certified by the State of Connecticut and has coached for over 25 years.  Czarnecki has coached for the Greenwich Basketball Association, Greenwich Flame travel team, Greenwich Boys and Girls Club and the freshman, JV, and Varsity Basketball teams at GHS.

The course will be held in the Bendheim Western Civic Center Gym.  Registration will begin by mail only from Jan. 2-7.  In-person registration at the Civic Center begins on Jan. 9.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that indoor soccer will begin at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center on Wednesdays starting Jan. 23 and continuing through March 12.  There will be no class on Feb. 15.

The first class will be for children that are 4- and 5-years-old.  It will meet from 3:15-4pm.  The second class will be for children that are 6- and 7-years-old and will meet from 4-4:45pm.

The program will be taught by soccer with Aldwin.  The soccer with Aldwin program is a unique training program that focuses on teaching the fundamentals of soccer in a fun environment.  The players will practice kicking, passing, ball control, dribbling, shooting, agility and much more.

For over 15 years, soccer with Aldwin has been running soccer training programs throughout Connecticut.

The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that registration for indoor field hockey clinics at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center will be starting by mail only on Jan. 2. These specialized clinics will meet on five consecutive Sundays starting Jan. 22.

The Session I class is for girls 8- to 9-years old, and the program will be from 3:30-4:30 pm.  Session two will be from 4:30-5:30 p.m. for children 10 - 12-years old.  The program will help children develop skills in stick work, passing, receiving, shooting, basic offensive and defensive skills and small sided games.

Emily Prince, who played at Princeton and was a three-time All-American college player, will be directing and coaching the girls.
