The FCIAC playoff hopes of the Greenwich High School boys basketball team took a hit Monday as the Cardinals suffered a 52-41 loss to Fairfield Warde in Fairfield.

The Cardinals had all kinds of trouble scoring in the first half, trailing 7-2 after the first quarter and 21-7 at the half.

Warde extended its lead to 46-23 before Greenwich made the final a bit more respectable against the Mustangs' reserves in the fourth quarter.

Sem Kroon scored 13 points and Alejandro Rodriguez added 10 for the Cardinals, who dropped to 11-8 overall and 9-8 in the FCIAC.

The defeat left Greenwich in a five-way tie for seventh in the FCIAC with Bridgeport Central, Danbury, Warde and Trumbull. The Cardinals close the season at Danbury on Wednesday in a must win for both team. Danbury beat Norwalk 81-75 in overtime on Monday.

Mike Wright scored 15 points and Sal Siciliano added 13 for Warde, which improved to 11-8 and 9-8.

The Mustangs stayed in the playoff race, but the likely will have to beat undefeated St. Joseph on Wednesday to secure a berth.

Central has a winnable game at McMahon on Wednesday, although the Senators defeated Staples 64-62 on Tuesday. Trumbull also has a tough finale against Trinity Catholic.

If Warde and Trumbull don't pull upsets, Central beats McMahon as expected and Greenwich wins at Danbury, the Cardinals would finish in tie for seventh with Central and clinch a playoff spot.

Cos Cob's Sean Backman must loving playing against the Albany Devils.

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers' forward scored only his fourth goal of the season in Monday's 3-0 win over Albany. Three of those goals, however have come against the Devils.

The 25-year-old Backman, who starred at Yale, was signed by the New York Islanders as a free agent on Aug. 8 and assigned to the Sound Tigers, where he has played in 42 games this season.  He also has recorded six assists.

Last season, Backman played in 67 games for the Texas Stars, the AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars, amassing seven goals and 16 assists.

Backman's youger brother, Brett, is a sophomore at Greenwich High School and a member of the Cardinals' hockey team.
