Greenwich Scores and Standings, Aug. 3

Greenwich's David Pastore is entered in the 109th Met Amateur Championship, which begins Thursday at the Piping Rock Country Club in Locust Valley, N.Y.

After 36 holes of stroke play on Thursday, the low 16 scores will advace to match play.

Other area players entered include Evan DeLuca of Smith Richardson, William Delano of the Country Club of New Canaan, Tommy McDonagh of Shorehaven, Jeffrey Holzschuh of the Stanwich Club and Weston's Bernie D'Amato.

The 24th annual Jerry Sr. Memorial Celebrity Golf Tournament, the longest continually running celebrity charity event in the Northeast, will be played Aug. 9 at the Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich.

The fundraiser benefits Abilis, formerly known as ARC, which provides support to people with autism, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.

The tournament honors the late Jerry Porricelli Sr., the tournament's top organizer for many years.

Tommy John, Howard Johnson, Ottis Anderson and Karl Nelson are among the sports celebrities who have confirmed their appearance. The tournament will be played with a shotgun format starting at 12:45 p.m.

Also playing will be Sue Merz, a Greenwich native who was a member of the 1998 U.S. gold-medal winning hockey team.

Former Giants wide receiver Don Herrmann, former Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jimmy Key, longtime Mets coach Joe Pignatano, former NFL kicker Eric Schubert, former NFL tight ends Pete Mitchell and Brian Saxton also are among the 14 sports celebrities who have committed to the event.

John is a former major league pitcher who played with the New York Yankees while Johnson spent most of his 14 seasons with the New York Mets and was on their 1986 World Series-winning team.

Anderson, a popular running back in New York, was a mainstay on two Giants' teams that won Super Bowls and was the MVP of Super Bowl XXV.

Nelson, another popular player, was an offensive tackle on the Giants' team that beat then Broncos to win Super Bowl XXI in 1987.

The fee for golf is $600 per player or $2,200 per foursome. It includes brunch, a day of golf with a celebrity, a cocktail reception, awards banquet and prizes. Spots are still available.
