In Saturday's 7-6 win over Bethel at Palmer Field in Middletown, Dylan Callahan worked out of a jam in the seventh by getting the final two outs after giving up a two-run single that had cut the deficit to one.

All of Saturday's games were shortened to seven innings because of the threat of thunder storms.

Greenwich jumped out to a 5-0 lead, taking advantage of the wildness of Bethel starter Kyle Wilcox, who walked six.

Greenwich extended its lead to 7-4 in the fifth on Taylor Olmstead's two-run single. that scored Brennan and Collins.

Brian Schutzman, the second of Greenwich's three pitchers, earned the win in relief of Ryan Carr.

The U-12 Greenwich soccer team will fly home today after playing in a soccer tournament in Sweden. The team reached the quarterfinals of the event, falling to the club that reached the final at the Heden Center in Gothenburg.

On Sunday, the team ventured outside Gothenburg to spend some time socializing with a local Swedish squad at a barbeque.

The Greenwich Redbirds got another chance against Black Rock Sunday in the section one junior softball league tournament, but the result was the same.

Black Rock defeated Greenwich 10-1 to advance to the state finals against Waterford. In pool play, Black Rock defeated Greenwich, 14-0.

The 77th Connecticut Open got under way Monday morning at the Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. The club is hosting the tournament for the sixth time, having previously been the site of the event in 1935, 1938, 1958, 1973 and 1991.

Defending champion Kyle Gallo of Kensington is looking to become the first five-time winner of the tournament.  He is coming off an impressive victory at the Massachusetts Open Championship.

The 130-player field includes a number of local players, including Stamford's  Mike Ballo Jr., who was the runner-up in the Massachusetts Open Club.

Also entered is recent New England Amateur champion Jeff Hedden of the Black Hall Club.

Other area players include Greenwich's Daniel Balin and David Pastore, Darien's Mike Ballo Jr. and Greg Reilly, Norwalk's Jerry Courville, Weston's Bernie D'Amato, Westport's John Gentile, Wilton's Brian and John Murphy and Fairfield's Brad Worthington.
