Originally slated for Friday at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium, the FCIAC championship game will be played in Westport on Thanksgiving since the Wreckers were scheduled to host the Cardinals in their traditional regular-season finale.

Each team finished 8-0 in the FCIAC with the Cardinals dropping their out-of-conference game to New London, 51-33. Staples did not fill its bye week and will play only nine games.

While a league championship will be on the line, Greenwich also needs a win to secure a state tournament berth.

The Cardinals have climbed to seventh in the Class LL rankings with 1,000 points, ahead of Ridgefield, Shelton and Pomperaug, who all have 930 points with winnable games on tap for Thanksgiving.

The Greenwich boys soccer team (10-5-3) visits top seed Pomperaug in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament on Monday (7 p.m.)

The 17th-seeded Cardinals advanced with a 2-1 win over Hamden on penalty kicks (6-5).

Pomperaug (17-1-1), which had a bye in the first round, was undefeated until losing in the finals of the SWC playoffs to Bunnell.

The winner of Monday's contest gets either No. 8 Newtown or No. 9 Fairfield Prep in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Eight FCIAC teams have reached the second round of the state tournament: No. 3 Norwalk, No. 7 Trumbull, No. 11 Staples, No. 17 Greenwich and No. 19 Westhill in Class LL and 5 Darien, No. 12 New Canaan and No. 16 Wilton in Class L.

The Greenwich field hockey team (6-6-3-2) will look for a second straight upset when the 20th-seeded Cardinals visit No. 5 Hamden on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament (6 p.m.).

After an uncharacteristically sub-par regular season, Greenwich upset No. 4 Conard 1-0 in the first round on Friday.

The winner of Monday's contest gets either No. 9 seed Staples or top seed Cheshire in the semifinals on Wednesday.
