After a wild last two weeks, the battle for the FCIAC's final playoff spot had to be settled in overtime, and Greenwich High School came out on the short end.

Rallying from a seven-point deficit entering the final quarter, Danbury defeated the Cardinals 62-53 on Wednesday to clinch the  seventh seed in the FCIAC playoffs.

The Hatters 12-8, 10-8) finished tied with Bridgeport Central, which also clinched a playoff spot with a win over McMahon on Wednesday, but earned the higher seed based on their season-opening 106-103 double overtime win against the Hilltoppers.

Greenwich finished at 11-9 and 9-9 after losing seven of its last nine regular-season games and now prepares for the Class LL state tournament.

Alejandro Rodriguez scored 17 points and Alex McMurray added for the Cardinals, who took a 40-33 lead into the fourth  period.  Greenwich was trailing 49-46 when McMurray hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to force overtime.

Timothy Jackson paced Danbury with 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Danyjoel Harris and Javonte Parker added 15 and 10 for the Hatters, respectively.

Danbury finished the regualar season at 12-8 and 10-8, will take on No. 2 Trinity Catholic in the FCIAC quarterfinals on Saturday at Fairfield Ludlowe. Central is the No. 8 seed and will play undefeated St. Joseph.

Led by Olivia Hompe, the New Canaan High School girls hockey team stormed into the FCIAC finals Wednesday with a 6-1 victory over rival Darien at the Darien Ice Rink.

Hompe scored four goals, raising her season total to 64, as the Rams improved to 20-1.

After a scoreless first period, New Canaan broke it open with five goals in the second period, three of them by Hompe. Abbey Buckenheimer and Holly Burwick had the only goals for New Canaan.

Britt Gardellla faced only eight shots for New Canaan, giving up a second-period goal to Emily Tropsa. Shannon Hall made 15 saves for Darien.

New Canaan will face Greenwich in Saturday's championship game set for 4 p.m. at the Terry Conners Rink in Stamford.

The Cardinals advanced with a 4-3 win over Ridgefield in Wednesday's first semifinal, rallying from a 2-1 deficit after the second period.

Hannah Jeffrey scored a hat trick and Emily Bacon had the other goal for the Cardinals. Allie Schiffer, Cara Lockwood and Kerry Sheehan-Delany scored for Ridgefield.

Dart Freccia made 16 saves for Greenwich and Heather Ogden stopped 22 shots for Ridgefield, which cut the deficit to 4-3 on Sheehan-Delany's goal with just over four minutes remaining.
