Wednesday Night Concert Series

Local band favorite Billy and the Showmen are on the bill for tonight's Wednesday Night Concert Series program at

If you haven't heard this group, fronted by Billy Frenz, then pack a picnic basket or a cooler, bring a beach chair and head to the waterfront park for the free 7:15 p.m. show. It's a great, cool musical respite from the summer heat.

(And you don't need a beach pass or residency proof to enjoy the weekly concerts programmed by the Greenwich Parks and Recreation Department.) Given Frenz's group's popularity, you might want to head out early to scout out your patch of turf—the group draws several hundred from kids to grandparents, to their outdoor concerts. You'll the de rigeur coolers laden with snacks and drinks to tablecloth-topped tables adorned with candlebras and trays of hors d'oeuvres.

Whatever your choice, it's a foot-tapping time that prompts many to get up and dance.

It's hard to believe Billy and the Showmen was founded right here in Greenwich by Frenz 49 years ago. The group is known for its R&B, soul, and funk sounds from the '60s and '70s with works by James Brown, Rick James, Percy Sledge, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett, Junior Welles, King Floyd,  Average White Band, Tower of Power, Buddy Miles, Kool & the Gang, Otis Redding and classic Motown artists including the Temptations and Sam & Dave.

The band's performs in local and regional venues as well as the New York City area, and special events including the annual St. Roch's Fest in Chickahominy, the Alive @ Five concert series in Stamford, the and the summer concert series in Port Chester. They headlined the inaugural ball of Gov. Dannel Malloy in Hartford in 2011.
