Adopt Apollo

Apollo is a 7 month Pit Mix pulled from a New York shelte. Neutered, vetted, and ready to go. He loves dogs, cats, and kids! Meet him Sat., Feb. 2 at Stratford PetCo 955 Ferry Blvd. 12-3pm.

"I have had many dogs, including pits, and this is one of the gentlest and sweetest dogs I have ever met." That is the message I received from my new foster home that has Apollo, the pit puppy. I knew exactly where she was coming from. Apollo just looks at you with the most soulful and grateful eyes. He doesn’t miss a single opportunity to snuggle up in your lap. Apollo’s foster later admitted that he slept in the bed with her (as he did with me the week prior) Apollo has been through a lot in his young 6 or 7 months. Pulled from the streets from suspected dog fighters with his sister, he ended up at the Mount Vernon Shelter where they were full to capacity. A puppy, let alone any dog, should not have to live in a kennel for 23 hours a day, so we banded together to find fosters. Sucker that I am, I took Apollo home one week after arriving at the city shelter. Thankfully his sister went to another rescue group in Connecticut.

After a day of romping in the yard with my two-year-old female pit we all snuggled on the couch to watch TV when my daughter noticed Apollo’s right eye was shut. At closer observation I could see his eyelid was turned completely inward instead of out. I knew right away it was a condition called entropian that can eventually lead to blindness. 'Darn it,' he would need surgery. Luckily he was scheduled to be neutered in three days and the thanks to my rescue group, Cat Assistance, and the incredible Vets at Central Animal Hospital in Scarsdale, we were able to take care of this while he was already under. The surgery was a success.

If you are looking for an active, young puppy who will wants to be the center of your world then Apollo’s your guy.  Apollo would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time. He would love a fenced in yard and would not be opposed to a canine buddy or kids!
