At the Public Access, Ch 88 Holiday Party last week a woman approached me and told me that her friend has a Chess program in Norwalk that I may be interested in. She had my undivided attention from that point on. She was very soft spoken and petite, so I understood where she was coming from when sheepishly she said, “You know Chess is a game of War – I don’t like war”.
Life is given then you have to stay alive, which entails getting and/or having, food, clothing and shelter that in itself, for most, is a daily struggle (wars, if you will). I know Chess is about war, and I don’t like war either, but it don’t mean I ain’t affected by one in some form or another, daily. There’s the war on drugs, war on crime, war on poverty, war on terrorism and the wars of Iran and Afghanistan. And, we’re being dangled over a “Fiscal Cliff”, while the rich and powerful are at war with the middle classes (upper and middle) and the poor over tax increases.
The process of life, from birth to grave is filled with obstacles, roadblock, restriction, landmines and manipulations, just to name a few (Wars). As a teen my grandmother taught me to think ahead and to watch where I put my foot down, something most teens and tweens aren’t being taught - the importance of making calculated moves as one maneuvers through life. Engaging in Chess first is the road map.
