Recently I was asked what's the benefits of children learning the Chess Song. I must say I was a little taken aback by the question because the answer is in the title of the song. Children learn the basic of the game of Chess before sitting at the Chessboard.

My daughter’s gift of a cruise this past September included me rooming so close to the ships engine room that I was forced to spend a lot of time on the ships open deck (I'm not complaining). On the ship’s deck was a large Chessboard and pieces. At first I watched children use the Chess pieces as toys to throw around, instead of engaging in a game of Chess. Then I saw men struggling to teach children the game of Chess because they had to constantly repeat how each piece moved. Some men stop engaging their young charges in the game before others could hear them yelling and some didn’t. I remember thinking that if those children knew the Chess Song the men would be teaching them strategy
instead of turning off the children to ever playing Chess again.

I talk about NEIGHBORS, the Chess Song and the benefits of young people learning Chess to any and all listening ears. This woman and I would sit on the deck of the ship talking and watching the goings on at the large Chessboard. On the last day of our cruise she and I were watching what we believe were a father and son playing a game of Chess. The father was growing real impatient with the child and soon started yelling at the kid, at that point the woman I was sitting with turned to me and said, “I think you should contact the cruise line and tell them you want to offer your Chess Song program as an addition to their children shipboard activities”.
