Great Captain's Island is located about one-and-a-half miles off shore. The Island is named after Captain Daniel Patrick, a partner in the first recorded real estate transaction in Greenwich (1640s) and the town's first military commander.

The island is accessible by private boat and public ferry, which leaves from the landing at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park during the summer months. Parking is available across Arch Street.

A recreation area includes a beach for swimming, boat mooring, picnic tables grills and rest rooms. Trails wind through the natural area to the lighthouse. Overnight camping requires reservation through the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The beach is open year round, though Park/Beach Passes are required from May 1 to October 31.
