Montgomery Park and Pinetum

Flag as Inappropriate

Greenwich residents have Colonel Montgomery to thank for the town's Montgomery Pinetum Park, which is home to the Greenwich Garden Center. The Colonel purchased the 30-acre property in the 1920s and set out to obtain as many conifers as possible.

Some 80 varieties remain today, and maps and tree guides are available at the Garden Center office for interested explorers. The Garden Center itself is located in a portion of the original Montgomery home, and the small greenhouse seen in the park is operated by the center for educational purposes.

With or without a map in hand, residents and visitors are welcome to meander along the informal footpaths that skirt the park. Be advised that some trails are tame, while others traverse thicket and underbrush. Also on the property, not far from the pond, is the Greenwich Audobon Society's Mildred Bedard Caldwell Wildlife Sanctuary. The park features a a large picnic area and ample parking.
