Malkin Behind Central Greenwich Post Office Sale

Land baron Peter Malkin behind deal which could bring another high-end fashion boutique to Greenwich Avenue.

An agreement has been signed to sell the main Greenwich Post Office facility on Greenwich Avenue, according to documents filed with the Greenwich tax assessor’s and town clerk’s offices.

According to the Memorandum of Agreement for Sale and Purchase of Property, 310 Greenwich Avenue LLC has until May 6, 2012 to finalize the deal. According to the Connecticut Secretary of State’s Office, the principal of the Dover, DE-based company is Malkin 310 Greenwich LLC with offices in New York City.

Two months ago, Greenwich Patch reported that the United States Postal Service finalized a lease agreement to will be relocate to a former Choice Pet Supply store on Amogerone Cross Way, near the top of Greenwich Avenue, from the columned, historic facility on Greenwich Avenue at the intersection of Arch Street. The postal service announced last year it would sell the building that’s listed on the Register of National Historic Places, as it continues its national efforts to consolidate and downsize operations.

Situated on about a half-acre of prime downtown real estate, the postal service was seeking about $15 million.

Privately, several local officials have said they were told that real estate magnate Peter Malkin of Greenwich, whose holdings include the Empire State Building. The address listed on the 310 Greenwich LLC documents filed with the secretary of state’s office is Grand Central Place at 60 E. 42nd St., one of dozens of properties held by the company owned by Malkin Properties, which was co-founded by Malkin in 1961.

Those local officials also have said they were told the property at 310 Greenwich Ave. would be rented by the high-end retailer Bergdorf Goodman.

Efforts to reach Malkin have been unsuccessful.

The use of the main branch has declined over the years. It is now used for retail operations and postal box rentals, with its mail sorting operations now handled at the regional hub on Valley Road.
