Flash Mob Targets Greenwich Farm

Mother Nature rolled out a perfect 10 for the 50-strong flash mob who descended en masse at Augustine's Farm

A flash mob comprised of dozens of Greenwich residents descended en masse in a coordinated flash mob, also known as a "cash-mob," to show some love on Saturday.

Several weeks ago a handful of Greenwich moms met in a kitchen to brainstorm a worthy recipient of a coordinated "cash-mob." The kitchen brainstorming sesson criteria included factors like "non-chain," "longstanding," and "committed to the community." The deliberation took just minutes.

"Augustine's Farm," everyone said in unison, "Unprompted!" said Gay Martel-Morris, herself a longtime Greenwich artist. "We had anticipated bickering and maybe a ballot process. But, no, the recipient was agreed to quickly and the only quibble was over selecting a date that worked for the everyone."

Once the date of May 19th was selected, each mom from the kitchen gathering forwarded an e-mail invitation to her own friends.

"When my invite circulated back to me from Jeff Cordulack at Greenwich Audubon Society, I knew it would be a hit," said Susan Franco of Glenville, a loyal customer of the farm. "I think it went viral."

By 9:55 a.m., the parking lot of the King Street farm was full of cars including that of state Rep. Livvy Floren. At 10 o'clock sharp it was a mobscene at the last working farm in Greenwich.

The honey from the Augustine's bee hives sold fast. "Honey makes a thoughtful gift," said Luann Pasciak, a longtime Greenwich resident, who purchased two 1-pound jars of honey, as well as two dozen farm fresh eggs. "I was surprised there were so many different kinds."

Augustine's honey varieties include clover, goldenrod, blueberry, raspberry and pumpkin blossom, priced at $8.00 per lb. Freshly laid eggs are just $4.00 a dozen.

Farmstand hours are daily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Beginning June 15, the farmstand will be open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Beginning in June produce available will include, early garden peas, Swiss chard, beets, carrots, and bok choi – all grown at the farm. Also, beginning in June, local strawberries will also be available for sale, though not grown at Augustine's.

Greenwich grown, family owned
"Greenwich grown, family-owned," said Farmer John. "That's our saying. "Who else can say that?" he asked. Who else, indeed.

Augustine's Farm is located at 1332 King Street.
