Grandmother, Grandson Were Victims of Accidental Drowning

The Greenwich grandmother and her two-year-old grandson who were found in a backyard koi pond Thursday morning, died from accidental drowning, police said Monday.

In a statement released Monday afternoon by , autopsies performed over the weekend by the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner in Farmington concluded that Anna Furano, 67, and her 2-year-old grandson Massimo Furano, accidentally drowned Thursday at the 12 Fox's Ln. home in central Greenwich, Mrs. Furano shared with her husband Carmine.

The couple was babysitting Massimo, who celebrated his second birthday May 25. Mr. Furano had left the home about 9 a.m. Thursday and returned about 10:30 a.m. A short time later discovered them unconscious in the koi pond.

Police and the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service tried to revive the pair and brought them Greenwich Hospital where they were pronounced dead a short time later.

Calling hours for Mrs. Furano and her grandchildren will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Castiglione Funeral Home, 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. Their funerals will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at , 178 Greenwich Ave., Greenwich.

Mrs. Furano and her husband had three children, sons, Pasquale and Giuseppe, and a daughter, Chiara. She enjoyed cooking and gardening but her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren.

Massimo Furano was the son of Giuseppe and Emelia Furano.

Police have said the pond had a low stone wall and fence enclosure, with a total height of about 2 ½ feet. Fox's Lane is a narrow, private driveway-like road between Columbus Avenue and Livingston Place, off West Putnam Avenue, with six multi-family homes.

In their statement, Greenwich Police said that it expects to finish its investigation into the deaths soon.
