Greenwich Crushes Bassick, 49-8

Cardinals put away Friday's game early by jumping out to 28-0 lead after the first quarter

Greenwich put away Friday's contest against overmatched Bassick early.

The Cardinals erupted for 28 points in the first quarter en route to a 49-8 victory over the Lions for their second win of the young season.

In the first quarter alone, Shane Nastahowski scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, Alex McMurray added another 1-yard TD burst and Michael Daly returned a blocked punt 35 yards for a score.

A 2-yard TD run by sophomore quarterback Jose Melo gave Greenwich (2-0) a 35-0 halftime lead.

In the fourth quarter, the defense got into the act as defensive lineman Nick Pennella recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Mike Longo tacked on an 11-yard TD run before Bassick avoided the shutout on Vochan Fowler's 59-yard TD pass to Morlo Macklin.

Bassick, which has a new coach in Derrick Lewis, has dropped its first two games by a combined margin of 98-14. Last week, the Lions lost Lewis'  debut to New Canaan, 49-6.
