A dairy delivery truck overturned in central Greenwich detouring traffic throughout the morning.

Greenwich Police say the load of milk in crates stacked inside a refrigerated delivery truck, along with road conditions may have contributed to the truck overturning on Field Point Road Monday morning.

The 7:15 a.m. crash injured the truck driver and forced the closure of the road —between West Putnam Avenue and West Elm Street—for about five hours.

"It's a tri-axle box truck loaded with crates of milk. It's inherently top heavy," said Sgt. John Slusarz of the police department's Traffic Section. "As it's going around the curve ... with the road inclination, wet roads ... all of this contributed to it. The truck tilted to the point of no return."

"This was not an incredible or magnificent rollover where the truck kept rolling over and over," Slusarz said. "It was just a plop with the driver and passenger suspended by the seatbelts as the cab is heading towards phone pole." The cab of the truck was crushed by the impact.

The driver received many cuts and was taken to Greenwich Hospital for treatment. The passenger wasn't injured.

Slusarz said the driver was cited but that he could not provide those details until the investigating officer completed the accident report.

The dairy delivery truck that overturned, closing Field Point Road for most of Monday morning was uprighted and the road reopened to traffic shortly after noon.

Five truck crews from East Coast Towing in Stamford attached cables and slings to the truck that overturned and hit a utility pole in front of 45 Field Point Rd. and pulled it back onto its wheels. (Please see video.)

Greenwich Fire Department and Greenwich Public Works Department crews dumped absorbent material onto the road and sidewalks after the truck was uprighted.

A refrigerated truck filled with $15,000 in milk, yogurt and dairy products rolled over into a utility pole as the driver attempted to negotiate the turn on Field Point Road at West Elm Street about 7:15 a.m. Monday.

According to Greenwich Fire Department Deputy Chief Thomas Zack, the unidentified driver suffered cuts to his hands and head and was removed through the crushed windshield by emergency crews. The driver was taken to Greenwich Hospital. A passenger was not injured, Zack said.

"We had milk pouring out the back of the truck," Zack said. "I was concerned with the runoff into the storm drains affecting wildlife and fish, I contacted the DEEP (Department of Energy and Environmental Protection). They gave us permission to flush the road ... we used about 500 gallons of water to flush the road."

Shortly after 11 a.m. crews from East Coast Towing were working to upright the truck which smashed into a utility pole in the intersection, Zack said. That work came after the milk and yogurt were off-loaded into a plastic-lined 30-yard Dumpster, Zack said. The contaminated products were to be brought to the Stamford Transfer Station for disposal by order of the DEEP.

A crew from Connecticut Light & Power also responded to the scene and determined the pole and connecting utility lines were not damaged, Zack said.

The truck is owned by Dora Naturals of South Hacksack, NJ, according to Zack, who said the bill of lading indicated the load of dairy products valued at $12,000 to $15,000.

Field Point Road between West Elm Street and West Putnam Avenue remain closed to traffic during the cleanup.
