Tesei, Theis Survey Greenwich During Hurricane

Thousands without power; few residents took advantage of shelters.

First Selectman Peter Tesei and Selectman David Theis spent Sunday morning surveying damage caused by Hurricane Irene.

Tesei said he was concerned with the pending morning high tide whipped by the heavy winds.

Many residents evacuated neighborhoods in Old Greenwich, but few took advantage of the town's two emergency shelters - the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center on Pemberwick Road and the Eastern Middle School on Hendrie Avenue in Riverside. Less than 50 people spent the night in the shelters, he said. (Please see video.)

However, late Sunday morning, residents of Lucas Point near the entrance to Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich were evacuated with the rising tide.

According to a recorded message from Greenwich Deputy Police James Heavey and issued using the town's reverse 911 telephone system, the town remains under a state of emergency and travel is discouraged.

As Irene spun northeast through New England Sunday afternoon, there were periodic glimpses of sunlight as dark clouds were blown away by gusty winds, which are predicted to continue through Sunday night, with occasional rain.
