What to Do with Your Pet in a Hurricane

A hurricane is heading toward Greenwich. Does your pet have a disaster plan prepared? Whether a quick exit is necessary or you are housebound for several days, it is important to prepare ahead of time. Once the crisis hits, there won't be time to get organized.

An easy, quick, common sense checklist for a Pet Preparedness Plan:

Create a pet designated travel bag filled with pet gear:

• Pet medications with written instructions attached
• Fresh bottled water in a leak proof container
• Package some dry food and canned food (don't forget a can opener).
• Food dishes
• A favorite toy
• Rescue Remedy for stressful moments
• Leash and collar or harness
• Pet first aid kit 
• Photo of the family with the pet
• Extra litter pan and litter

Be sure ID tags are up-to-date with important phone numbers, including vet and other family members just in case there is accidental separation.

Have a travel crate and crate pad ready in case you have to make a quick exit. Attach a note with the following information: Pet's name, owner's name, address, vet's name, contact information for owner and vet. Any other information that will help your pet in the event (s)he is separated from you, such as, "I love children but am not so sure about cats."

Affix a pet rescue sticker to the front and back doors of your home in case emergency responders are called.

Being displaced or experiencing a storm is very stressful, not only for you, but for your pet, too. Consider that dogs and cats like routine and when something is different and they feel your heightened stress level, they could become stressed and out of sorts, as well. A stressed pet may behave erratically. (S)he may even become so upset that they attempt to run away.
