Greenwich History at Greenwich Library

Carl White, in charge of historical material at , is arranging an exhibit of historical material at the library with the cooperation and assistance of the . The material on display will be vintage  documents issued by two "back-county" railroads the New York, Housatonic, & Northern railroad and the Ridgefield and New York railroad, and documents issued by the Harlem River & Port Chester railroad.

The two "back-country" lines were never completed, but the Harlem River and Port Chester railroad proved to be a vital addition to  the New Haven railroad because it eventually  became  the "link" between the New Haven system and the Pennsylvania railroad via the magnificent Hell Gate Bridge which at the time was the most massive steel-arch bridge in the World.

The present-day Amtrak rail line between Boston and Washington was originally  formed as an amalgamation of many separate railroad, and the Harlem River and Port Chester indeed was "one of the many."
