Temple Sholom Celebrates Chanukah in a BIG Way

On Sunday, November 24, Temple Sholom hosted a Chanukah Extravaganza which included building a giant menorah out of LEGOs, making handmade Chanukah candles, decorating dreidel-shaped cookies, and eating latkes.  Children of all ages, along with their parents, gathered for the celebration.

The highlight of this year’s Chanukah Extravaganza was the construction of a giant LEGO menorah.  Architect Stephen Schwartz, founder of Building Blocks Workshops,  brought boxes filled with 70,000 LEGO pieces to Temple Sholom to use to create the menorah.  Children were divided into teams, each tasked with building a portion of the base. Once all the sections were put together, Schwartz climbed a ladder and attached the top of the menorah, which he pre-assembled himself.  Accompanied by Chanukah music and songs, he lit the candles to kick off the holiday which runs through December 5 (with the last candles lit the night of December 4).  A festive holiday lunch, including latkes (potato pancakes fried in oil), a traditional holiday treat which commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days when the Maccabees rededicated the holy Temple in Jerusalem, was served.

Temple Sholom is a Conservative-Egalitarian congregation which has served the Greenwich, Stamford, and Rye Brook communities for more than 90 years. For more information about Temple Sholom, please call (203) 869-7191 or visit our website at www.templesholom.com.
