A Community Garden Grows In Greenwich

Tucked behind the Armstrong Court housing complex in the Chickahominy section of Greenwich is a farming oasis that gives a new definition to community gardens.

Under the helpful hands of volunteer, Patty Sechi of Greenwich Communit Gardens, residents of the Greenwich Housing Authority’s properties and residents from throughout town till the earth to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in the 15,000 square foot space.

Tender shoots of beans, peas, arugula, lettuces, beets, tomatoes, oregano, broccoli, kale, collard greens and cabbage are flourishing in the sunny, fenced-in space that measures 500 feet long and 30 feet wide. Most of the gardeners grow their own food for their own farm-to-table efforts. Others donate their produce to Neighbor to Neighbor, the food pantry at Christ Church Greenwich, that serves hundreds of families in need, Sechi said.

Volunteers helped build the raised beds, Whole Foods and a garden center from New Milford donated the rich dirt to fill the beds. A pergola and patio area —which is used as a gathering and teaching space —was built by students from Brunswick School.

Greenwich Community Gardens also has created a butterfly garden near the Family Centers’ Head Start School that’s adjacent to the gardens. And last week, the wee students pitched in and planted a variety of organic potatoes which they will harvest in the months to come.

Sechi said the organization's plans to establish another community garden in Cos Cob, near the Garden Education Center on Bible Street should be ready by September.

There are still a few spaces available. Contact Sechi at Info@greenwichcommunitygardens.com .
