Pardon This Turkey. He's Your Source for Thanksgiving Provisions

Written by Leslie Yager
Farmer John and Kathy are ready at their King Street farm stand with everything you need to prepare your Thanksgiving dinner. Patch stopped by Friday afternoon and the shop is brimming with fresh-from-the fields produce:

Fall Veggies

Augustine's has acorn and sweet dumpling squash, as well as delicata and acorn squash. They have white sweet potatoes, which Farmer John said are sweeter than what you're used to, and are less stringy. They also have brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach and both red and green lettuce -- all of which are grown right there on the farm in Greenwich. That means minimal carbon footprint. In fact that's as local as you can get without growing it yourself.

They also have some kale and swiss chard, though John said the lack of water has diminished the quantity, as well as white potatoes, rainbow little potatoes and the last of the cherry tomatoes.

Apples

In the next week or two Augustine's will start with the "winesap" apple which is a tart apple good for eating, as well as a variety called Candy Kane. They also have apple cider from Clintondale New York.

So, if you're still in October-mode and have apples on your mind, Augustine's Farm has fourteen varieties of apples:

  • Pink Lady
  • Macoun
  • Ginger Gold
  • Bala
  • Granny Smith
  • Empire
  • Golden Delicious
  • Cortland
  • Yellow Delicious
  • Macintosh
  • Rome
  • Red Delicious
  • Matsu
  • Honey Crisp...

...and a new kind of apple called Golden Crisp which is bart and bittersweet. John describes it as a good eating apple but it's jumbo size makes it easy for baking too.

Pies

According to Farmer John their Thanksgiving pies were a bit hit last year and they will be taking orders again for Apple, Pumpkin, Chocolate Pecan and Apple-Walnut pies. Just call and place an order by the Monday before Thanksgiving (203) 532-9611. You can leave a message with your name, phone number and what type of pie you'd like. Pick-up day is Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.

Augustine's Farm is located at 1132 King Street.
