About 50 members of the Greenwich League of Women Voters gathered Tuesday for their annual legislative picnic, hosting Greenwich's legislative delegation who spoke about the highlights and lowlights of the just completed legislative session.
State Sen. Scott Frantz and state Reps. Fred Camillo, Livvy Floren and Steve Walko attended spoke during the potluck luncheon at the home of LWV Vice President Gay Coe.
Passage of gun safety laws were among the highlights of the session, Floren said. Frantz said adoption of an unsustainable two-year budget was a chief disappointment this year.
Walko expressed disappointment of the approval of a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens. "The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles said it is not equipped to handle that," Walko said.
Camillo thanked his colleagues for championing three of his bills while he recuperated from cancer surgery and treatments. Among the bills is an increase of fines for drivers who are cited for texting while driving and allowing insurance companies to be notified of a driver's conviction for the offense.
The Greenwich LWV, which has about 300 members, is the largest chapter in Connecticut and was founded in 1921.
Outgoing Greenwich chapter president, Cyndy Anderson said the group will be focusing its efforts this fall on getting out the vote for the local Greenwich elections. "Two years ago, about 37 percent of voters turned out," Anderson said. There are about 33,000 registered voters in town. "It's just so sad because the election touches so many people in town," Anderson said.
The group will be working on its annual voters guide as well. "We have found that for many people, it is the only thing they read before voting," Anderson added.
