Greenwich Library Director Carol Mahoney Resigns

Deputy Director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn is named as Mahoney's successor, effective March 1.

Greenwich Library Director Carol Mahoney has announced that she will resign the post she's held for five years.

Mahoney is set to leave next month to pursue other opportunities back home in Massachusetts. The library board has announced that Deputy Director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn, who has been with the library for 11 years, will assume the directorship March 1.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working in Greenwich and being a part of the community. The Greenwich Library is truly an amazing resource that touches the lives of people every day,” Mahoney said in a statement. “The Trustees, staff, Friends, as well as the patrons and volunteers, have all contributed greatly to the Library’s success. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve the Greenwich community.”

Prior to Greenwich Library, Ormerod-Glynn held librarian positions at Columbia and Fordham universities, as well as at Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and the Yonkers Public Library.

“Barbara has been a true colleague and she is a highly effective, hand-on administrator who is totally dedicated to her profession,” Mahoney said in the statement. “I am so pleased that she will have the opportunity to lead Greenwich Library into the future.”

Nancy Better, president of the Library’s Board of Trustees, said the board relunctantly accepted Mahoney’s decision, but understood her reasons for departing. “Carol came to us with 43 years of public library service in Massachusetts, and we knew that other opportunities closer to home would become available to her. She has been an exceptional leader who has taken Greenwich Library to new heights and we expect the momentum will continue under Barbara’s stewardship,” Better said.

During Mahoney’s tenure, Greenwich Library was named a five-star library five times by Library Journal. She led the library’s strategic planning process, worked with the staff to initiate new services and programs, and implemented Greenwich Reads Together with community organizations.

Mahoney came to Greenwich after serving as the Neighborhood Services Manager at the Boston Public Library where she had oversight of 26 full service branches. Prior to Boston, she served as director of libraries in Lexington, Lynnfield and Medway, MA.

Better said the library board will continue many of Mahoney's innovative ideas. “Throughout her tenure, Carol has looked for new ways to engage the community in the library’s core mission: to provide exceptional resources, programs and services that promote the joy of lifelong learning and discovery, and to offer a welcoming place for people to gather and share experiences.”
