St. Roch's Feast Does Indeed Rock Greenwich

For Barbara Sabito, there’s nothing like frying the dough for pizza fritta at the annual St. Roch Feast, the major fund-raiser for St. Roch Church in the Chickahominy neighborhood of Greenwich.

“Oh gosh, I’ve worked here for 40 years,” said Sabito with a hearty laugh. Yes, it gets hot standing sentry at the vats of bubbling oil but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

The key for an airy pizza fritta — says Sabito, is “the way the dough is stretched.” And there are legions of women volunteering to massage the dough and pass it off to another team who stretches it before the dough is dropped into the hot oil. For $4, you have a choice — powdered sugar or homemade gravy (tomato sauce with a sprinkle of cheese).

Other food choices for the four-day feast include sausage and pepper, and steak and cheese wedges for $6, pulled port pork sandwiches from Bobby’s Q of Riverside and sweet treats from The Fairways and Dominick’s Ice Cream.

Of course, there’s the requisite neon-colored cotton candy, popcorn and caramel apples.

But you probably want to take the rides on the Ferris Wheel, the super slide, Scrambler or merry-go-round before indulging in the treats.

The feast continues through Saturday every night from 6 to 11 p.m., with entertainment from local bands and a raffle with a grand prize that features a 2014 Fiat 500 convertible with the requisite Italian colors of white, green and red.

St. Roch’s Feast does rock!
