This week we're looking at five great nonprofits that make a difference. We also included website and contact information for those who want to inquire about getting more involved, or donating.

Each Thursday Patch will run a new feature called "The List," highlighting local picks geared toward planning your holidays, events and day-to-day life in Greenwich.

This week we’re looking at five great nonprofits that make a difference. We also included website and contact information for those who want to inquire about getting more involved, or donating.

  • Junior League Greenwich (http://www.jlgreenwich.org/): The national organization for young women’s Greenwich chapter boasts of 700 trained volunteer members who contribute hours of service and thousands of dollars to community projects each year.
  • United Way of Greenwich (http://www.unitedway-greenwich.com/) The Greenwich United Way is a humanitarian, volunteer-strong organization that focuses on identifying and addressing some of the most important human service needs, and assisting communities and crisis. Volunteers offer support services and raise funds for children, families and seniors in need.
  • Neighbor to Neighbor (http://n-to-n.org): An organization known for responding to emergencies, Neighbor to Neighbor prides itself on providing on-going supplemental food and clothing to individuals and families in the greater Greenwich area. By doing this, the organization strives to improve the lives of everyone in the community.
  • YWCA of Greenwich (greenwich@ywconnect.org; 203-869-6501) The YWCA of Greenwich, like its parent national organization, strives to “eliminate racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.” Volunteers are assigned to assist families and children in need (for example, by transporting and accompanying women to court and social services agencies). The YWCA also offers after-school recreational activities for children and teens.
  • Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich (http://www.bgcg.org/): This nonprofit organization offers children of all socioeconomic backgrounds plenty of “nurturing, safe and affordable” recreational outlets, including a summer camp, sports leagues and after-school program.
