The Art of Contemporary Illustration

The concept for this exhibition is to bring into focus as an art form the innumerable ways in which illustration in its varied formats shapes our view of ourselves and our world. The eleven artists presented here have created book illustrations, comics, graphic novels, sketched characters for animated movies, realized stories for newspapers, blogs and magazines, and literally stretched the modern digital capabilities of illustration.

Included are works by former Greenwich resident Jake Parker, creator of Missile Mouse, David Gordon, author of concept work for Pixar’s Toy Story I and II, Monsters, Inc. Cars and Sponge Bob Square Pants, and prints, paintings, sculptures, watercolors and drawings by equally noted artists.

Anna Dribble, for example, worked in the animation studios of Disney, Hanna Barbera and many others creating characters for Transformers, Tron, Dungeons and Dragons and The Electric Company. Greenwich author/illustrators, Anne and Lizzy Rockwell, have published 14 books together including the classic Apples and Pumpkins. Another Connecticut author/illustrator, Hans Wilhelm, with over 42 million books in print some of which have been translated into 20 different languages, is among America’s foremost creators of children’s books.
