Greenwich Youth Film Festival to Feature Area Students' Work

The festival is an opportunity to see area teens' cinematic creativity.

The third annual Greenwich Youth Film Festival (GYFF), hosted by The Junior League of Greenwich, will be held Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m. in the Cole Auditorium at Greenwich Library.

The festival encourages high school students in Fairfield County and Westchester County, to express themselves through the art of film. Students had the opportunity to submit original films during the entry period earlier this year. Some of the topics highlighted in this year’s films include environmental issues, empowering women, and bullying.

The GYFF event will include speakers Carina Crain, CEO and Colleen deVeer, Director of Programming of the Greenwich International Film Festival as well as writer, producer, director and actor Richard Switzer. At age 18, Switzer currently holds the title as the youngest film producer in history, with a recent profile on Entertainment Tonight. "A Fatal Obsession," Switzer’s first film as a producer, is set for release in 2014, staring Tracy Nelson and Eric Roberts.

The event will feature screenings of the top 28 films in the following five genres: Animation, Creative, Documentary, Music Video, and Public Service Announcement. Back by popular demand, a Best Freshman Film Award will be given to a freshman who shows great potential, selected by Greenwich High School Alumnus Madeleine Sackler.

Genre winners were selected by a top lineup of judges including Steve Bartels (Music Video), Blue Sky Studios (Animation), Mary Shanahan (PSA), Kevin Walsh (Creative), Clayton Pecorin and Justin Zackham (Documentary) and Madeleine Sackler (Best Freshman Film Award).

The event will conclude with an awards ceremony during which the top winners will be announced. Awards include $1,000 to the Grand Prize winner, $500 to the other four genre winners, $100 for all second place genre winners, $50 for all third place genre winners, and $250 for Best Freshman Film.

The GYFF is open to the public and free of charge. For tickets, please visit www.jlgreenwich.com
