Data Breach Reported at Local Splash Car Washes

The data breaches involve six of the 16 Splash Car Wash facilities in CT.

Customers who used the popular Slash Car Wash facilities should check their credit card bills.

According to reports, it seems that there's been a security breach of credit cards used by customers of the Splash locations in Fairfield, Cos Cob, Shelton, Greenwich, Bridgeport and West Haven — six of the 16 Splash locations around the state.

And yes, it's one of those breaches that involve using your credit card data to purchase gift cards, according to authorities.

Reports of the breach were first reported on June 23 on the blog Krebsonsecurity.com which details how investigators were able to crack the case.

It appears that the breach occurred from Feb. 28 to May 16 and has affected about 1,400 of Splash Car Wash's nearly 400,000 customers, according to The Advocate of Stamford. Since the data breach was discovered, Splash has changed its credit card readers and has hired a forensics investigator, according to the report.

The breach was discovered earlier in June when a man allegedly involved in a credit card theft and gift-card-buying scheme was arrested by police in Massachusetts. It turns out that the scheme is organized by the street gang called the Bloods.

According to one report, Splash founder Mark Curtis advises customers who have concerns to call (800) 927-4489.
