Birthday Reflections

Luckily Birthday Mania is limited to a select few.

Today is my birthday. I enjoy celebrating the one day of the year where I can celebrate being me. Reading that back it seems pretty narcissistic, but, hey, one of the great things about birthdays is that you can be narcissistic and self-indulgent and all those other things that go well with cake and ice cream and presents, lots of presents.

Apparently, I have always celebrated my birthday with gusto if those old, grainy, washed out color, eight millimeter movies of my first birthday are any indication. Most of those strangely young looking adults are gone now, and the kids have children and in some cases grandchildren, but sixty years is a long time ago. I will get together with my parents later for cake and ice cream. Chances are I will not put my hands and head in the cake again, but you never know. My parents remember my actual birthday, but I can't go back that far even in the movies. I like to acknowledge their contribution to my birthday plus they have all those photos of me when I was a lot cuter.

Birthdays are a time to take stock of your life and see how you measure up. I share my birthday with Meryl Streep. I suspect she may be a better actor, but I am definitely taller. Yup, I just checked she is 5' 6"; I have her by a good three to four inches (without heels).

Birthdays, like New Years, are a good time for resolutions. I woke early to walk Greenwich Point with a fitness cult that walks every day at 7:15 a.m. You can recognize them by their saffron robes, shaved heads and hand cymbals (just kidding, guys). I vow to exercise more and eat less (except for that cake and ice cream).

Birthdays are a good time to play hooky and watch baseball, particularly when the Yankees have a day/night double header. Just kidding; I am actually slaving away at the office. Well, taking a brief blogging break. Go Yanks!

Birthdays are a good time to be with family. Mine respects my birthday mania, which begins on June 1 when I display a big sign that says "June 22", which I liberated from the set of "1776" when it closed in 1986. Yes, I have been doing this for 25 years. They get me back by waking me up with the Beatle's "Birthday" song from the White Album.

I plan to stretch this out as long as I possibly can. Too bad July 4 comes up so fast.
