Cos Cob Couple Wins $10K Playing CT Lottery Scratch-off Game

Couple John "Rick" Leinhardt and Joan Brown plan to get engagement ring with prize money.

Cos Cob couple John “Rick” Leinhardt and Joan Brown will be getting hitched a little sooner thanks to the fact that they hit a $10,000 prize playing “Red Hot 5’s Doubler,” a CT Lottery instant game, last week.

According to a CT Lottery release, Leinhardt was planning to pop the question to Brown — the couple has been dating for two years — this December.

“I was going to buy Joan an engagement ring this Christmas, but thanks to this, I’ll be able to buy it for her now… maybe an even bigger one,” he said in the release.

Brown said she couldn’t believe it when she scratched off the two-sided lottery ticket and saw that they had won.

“There was a $1,000 prize in all ten prize areas… I was speechless,” she said. “We won $10,000 on a $5 scratch off. It was unbelievable.”

After taxes the couple took home $6,831.

The CT Lottery "Red Hot 5s Doubler," introduced May 23, is unique in that it is a two-sided ticket. There are 10 chances to win on the front of the ticket, and five more on the back. The top prize is $50,000.

For selling the prize-winning ticket, Cardello’s Deli Plus will receive a $100 bonus from the CT Lottery.
