Health department regulations mandate the closure of the beaches when there is 1 1/2 inches of rain during a 24-hour period. Reopening of the two land beaches is dependent upon rainfall, which is predicted to continue throughout Sunday and Monday, with a chance of showers into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

However, the beaches on the town's islands - Captain's Island and Great Captain's Island - remain open, according to the health department's announcement.

Greenwich Patch will post updates as they become available.
